Your Modeler's Signal Chain Is a Mess (Here's How to Fix It)

You spent hours picking out the perfect Kemper profiles or Tonex captures. You found THAT amp tone. The one that made you grin like an idiot when you played a power chord. And then you started stacking effects on top of it and... what happened? It sounds like a wet blanket wrapped around a trash can.

Nine times out of ten, the problem isn't your gear. It's not your captures. It's not your guitar. It's the order of your signal chain. And on a modeler, where you have total freedom to put blocks anywhere you want, it's shockingly easy to get it completely wrong.

Let's fix that.

Why Signal Chain Order Matters on a Modeler

On a traditional pedalboard, there's a physical reality that forces you to think about signal flow. Cable goes from pedal A to pedal B to pedal C. You can see the path. On a modeler like the Kemper, Quad Cortex, or a NAM rig running through a plugin host, you're arranging virtual blocks on a screen. It feels abstract. And because it feels abstract, people just start throwing blocks wherever there's space.

But here's the thing: the same physics apply. A chorus pedal before a distortion sounds completely different than a chorus after distortion. A compressor at the end of your chain does a totally different job than a compressor at the beginning. Every single block interacts with the blocks around it, and the order changes everything about how those interactions play out.

Think of it like cooking. Salt at the beginning of a braise does something different than salt sprinkled on top at the end. Both are valid. But if you're just randomly dumping ingredients in without thinking about timing, dinner's going to be weird.

The Golden Rule: What Goes Before the Amp vs. After

The single most important thing to understand is the relationship between your effects blocks and your amp block. This is the dividing line. Everything before the amp block acts like a pedal sitting in front of a real amplifier. Everything after the amp block acts like it's in the effects loop (or after the speaker).

Get this wrong and your Kemper profiles that sounded incredible on their own suddenly turn into fizzy, harsh, undefined mush. Not because the profile is bad. Because you're feeding it a mangled signal, or you're processing its output in a way that fights the natural character of the amp.

Before the amp block: Tuner, wah, compressor, boost/overdrive, fuzz, pitch shifters (if you want them to interact with gain)

After the amp block: Noise gate (post-amp), modulation (chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo), delay, reverb

That's the starting template. Not a law. But if you don't have a good reason to break it, stick with it.

Pre-Amp Effects: Building the Foundation

Tuner first. Always. Your tuner needs the cleanest, most unprocessed signal possible. Any effects coloring the signal before the tuner will confuse pitch detection. This is non-negotiable on every platform.

Wah and filter effects come next. Wah pedals respond to your picking dynamics and the raw character of your pickups. Put a wah after distortion and it turns into a harsh, screechy mess (unless that's what you're going for, in which case, rock on). Before gain, a wah sounds smooth, vocal, expressive. Classic Hendrix and Clapton territory.

Compressor before gain. A compressor here evens out your playing dynamics before they hit the amp. This is huge for clean tones and country picking, where you want every note at a consistent volume. It also adds sustain and tightens up your attack in a way that makes Tonex captures respond like a well-broken-in tube amp.

Overdrive and boost blocks go right before the amp. This is where the magic happens. A clean boost or transparent overdrive pushing the front of a great NAM capture does the same thing as cranking a tube amp harder. You get more saturation, more harmonic complexity, more of that "amp on the edge of breakup" thing that makes guitarists lose their minds. If you're using HeadRush clones, the same principle applies: hit the front of the amp model harder for more natural drive.

Post-Amp Effects: Adding Space and Dimension

Once your signal has gone through the amp block and the cab/IR, it's been shaped, compressed, and colored by the virtual amplifier. Now it's time to add the ear candy.

Modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo) go after the amp. When you put chorus before distortion, the varying pitch of the chorus effect gets amplified unevenly by the gain stage. It sounds wobbly and sick (and not in the good way). After the amp, modulation effects process a consistent signal and sound lush, musical, and controlled. This is especially true with high-gain NeuralDSP captures where any signal weirdness before the amp gets amplified tenfold.

Delay after modulation. You want your delay to capture the fully shaped, modulated signal and repeat it. If you put delay before chorus, the chorus processes each delay repeat differently, which creates a washy, unfocused sound. Delay after modulation gives you clean, defined repeats that sit perfectly in a mix.

Reverb last. Always. Reverb is the room your guitar lives in. It should be the final touch, the space that everything else sits inside. Put reverb before delay and your delays will have reverb tails bleeding into each repeat, creating a muddy, indistinct soup. Reverb at the end of the chain keeps things open and defined.

The Exceptions (Because Rules Are Meant to Be Bent)

Everything above is the "safe" starting point. But some of the coolest guitar tones in history came from breaking these rules intentionally.

Fuzz before wah: Jimi Hendrix ran his fuzz into his wah constantly. It creates that aggressive, synthy, vocal quality that sounds nothing like wah-before-fuzz. If you're going for psychedelic mayhem, try it.

Reverb before gain: Shoegaze, anyone? Running reverb into a cranked amp creates that massive, washy, wall-of-sound thing that My Bloody Valentine built a career on. On your modeler, try putting a reverb block before a cranked Kemper profile and prepare to lose an hour to ambient noodling.

Delay before gain: Slapback delay into a driven amp gives you that rockabilly, early rock and roll vibe. The repeats get crunched by the amp in a way that feels raw and alive.

The key is that these are intentional choices. Breaking the rules because you know what the rule is and what breaking it does sonically. That's different from having your blocks in random order because you didn't think about it.

Parallel Routing: The Modeler's Secret Weapon

Here's something your traditional pedalboard can't do (at least not easily). Most modern modelers let you run parallel signal paths. This means you can split your signal, process each path differently, and blend them back together.

Why does this matter for signal chain order? Because parallel routing lets you break the rules without the downsides. Want chorus before AND after your amp? Split the signal. Want a clean path blended with a heavily effected path? Split it. Running Tonex captures or NAM captures in parallel with different gain levels and blending them together is one of the best ways to get thick, complex tones that still have clarity and note definition.

If your modeler supports parallel paths, experiment with them. It's one of the biggest advantages digital has over analog, and most people never touch it.

A Quick Noise Gate Note

Noise gates are the one effect that legitimately works in multiple positions for different reasons. A gate before the amp block cuts noise before it gets amplified, which is great for tight, palm-muted metal riffs. A gate after the amp block catches any noise the amp model itself generates. Many players on NeuralDSP captures and high-gain Kemper profiles use BOTH: one gate before the amp to tighten the input, and one after to clean up the output. If you play high-gain stuff, this dual-gate approach is a game changer.

Stop Guessing, Start Listening

The best part about being on a modeler is that rearranging your signal chain takes seconds, not minutes of unplugging and re-patching cables. So don't just take my word for it.
