Your Modeler Sounds Great Solo. Here's Why It Disappears in the Mix.

We've All Been There
You spend an hour dialing in the most glorious guitar tone you've ever heard. Rich, full, dripping with harmonic goodness. You hit record, grinning like an idiot. Then you press play with the rest of the tracks and... where did your guitar go?
It's the most frustrating thing in home recording. Your modeler tone sounds absolutely massive when you solo it. But the second drums, bass, and vocals show up, your guitar turns into a ghost. It's there, technically. You can see it on the meter. But it might as well be invisible.
This isn't a modeler problem. This is a mixing problem. And the good news? It's totally fixable. Whether you're running Kemper profiles, Tonex captures, NAM captures, or any other modeler platform, the principles are exactly the same.
Let's fix your mix.
The "Sounds Great Solo" Trap
Here's what's happening: when you dial in a tone by yourself, you're listening in a vacuum. No bass guitar fighting for the low end. No kick drum stomping around in the same neighborhood. No vocals competing for midrange real estate. So you scoop the mids because scooped tones sound huge in isolation. You crank the bass because it feels thick and powerful. You boost the highs for sparkle.
And every single one of those decisions is about to wreck your mix.
That big, scooped, bass-heavy tone you love? It's occupying the exact same frequencies as your bass guitar, your kick drum, and the low end of your vocal. Your ears can only handle so much information in each frequency range before things start disappearing. Audio engineers call this frequency masking, and it's the number one reason guitar tones vanish in a mix.
The fix starts before you even open your EQ plugin.
Start With the Right Capture (Seriously, It Matters)
Not all captures and profiles are created equal, and this is where quality really shows up. A well-made Tonex capture or Kemper profile from a properly mic'd amp already has the frequency balance you need to sit in a mix. Cheap or poorly captured tones often have weird frequency buildups that make mixing a nightmare before you even start.
Think of it this way: a great capture is like starting with a great photo. You can tweak the color grading later, but if the original photo is blurry and overexposed, no amount of Lightroom magic is going to save it.

High-Pass Everything (Yes, Everything)
This is the single biggest improvement most home recorders can make, and it takes about three seconds.
Slap a high-pass filter on your guitar track and roll off everything below 80-100Hz. For rhythm guitars in a dense mix, you can push that even higher, up to 120-150Hz. Nothing good is happening down there for electric guitar. That's bass guitar and kick drum territory, and your guitar is just adding mud.
"But my tone sounds thinner!" Yeah, it does when you solo it. Now hit play on the full mix. Hear how everything suddenly has room to breathe? That's the magic. Your bass guitar just got bigger, your kick drum just got punchier, and your guitar is actually MORE audible because it's not fighting for space it was never going to win.
This applies to every platform. Running Kemper profiles? High-pass them. Tonex captures? High-pass them. NAM captures? You guessed it. High-pass filter. Always. No exceptions.
Mids Are Your Best Friend (Stop Scooping Them)
I know, I know. Scooped mids sound absolutely crushing when you're playing alone in your room at midnight. That big metal scoop is addictive. But mids are literally the frequency range where guitars live in a mix. Scoop them out and you're removing the one thing that makes your guitar audible.
The sweet spot for electric guitar presence sits roughly between 1kHz and 4kHz. A gentle boost somewhere in that range (start around 2-3kHz and sweep around until it pops) will make your guitar cut through vocals, drums, and everything else without needing to be louder.
Here's a trick that works ridiculously well: set up a narrow EQ boost of about 6dB, then slowly sweep it across the midrange while the full mix is playing. When you hit a frequency where your guitar suddenly appears in the mix like it was hiding behind a curtain, that's your spot. Back the boost down to 2-3dB and leave it there.
For the 500Hz-800Hz range, be careful. A little warmth here is nice. Too much and things get boxy and honky. If your guitar sounds like it's playing inside a cardboard box, cut a dB or two around 600Hz.
Your IR Matters More Than You Think
We've talked about impulse responses before, but it's worth hammering this point home in a mixing context. Your IR is basically your speaker cabinet and microphone, and those two things have a massive impact on how your guitar sits in a mix.
A dark, warm IR might sound beautiful solo, but it'll get buried by cymbals and vocals in a full mix. A bright, present IR might sound harsh by itself but absolutely nail the mix.
The move: audition your IRs with the full mix playing, not soloed. Pick the one that sounds best IN CONTEXT. It might not be the one you'd choose for bedroom playing, and that's totally fine. Studio tone and bedroom tone are two different animals.
If your Tonex captures or Kemper profiles have embedded cab simulations, try swapping to a different IR that sits better in your specific mix. Sometimes a single IR change is all it takes.
Compression: The Glue You're Missing
A lot of guitar players skip compression on their recorded tracks because the amp (or capture) is already compressing the signal naturally. And yeah, a driven amp does compress. But mix compression is a different beast entirely.
Light compression on your recorded guitar, say a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio with a medium attack and release, does something beautiful. It evens out the dynamics so your guitar maintains a consistent presence in the mix instead of poking out on loud notes and disappearing on quiet ones.
The key word here is "light." You're not trying to squash the life out of it. Just taming the peaks and bringing up the quieter moments so the guitar stays present from start to finish. If you can hear the compressor working, you've gone too far.
For rhythm guitars especially, a touch of bus compression on a stereo guitar group can glue double-tracked parts together and give them that "wall of sound" thing that makes records sound huge.
Double Track Your Rhythms (And Pan Them Hard)
If you're recording rhythm guitar as a single mono track panned up the middle, you're leaving a ton of power on the table. Record the part twice (actually play it twice, don't just copy and paste the same take), pan one hard left and one hard right, and suddenly you've got a massive stereo spread that fills out the mix without competing with the vocal and bass in the center.
This is standard practice on basically every rock and metal record ever made, but a surprising number of home recorders don't do it. Two takes of the same riff, panned wide, with a good NAM capture or HeadRush clone on each side? That's how you get album-quality guitar tones in your bedroom.
Pro tip: use slightly different captures or profiles on the left and right tracks. Different amp character, different IR, maybe even a different mic position sim. This creates natural stereo separation and prevents the two tracks from canceling each other out. Mix two NeuralDSP captures of different amps, or pair a Tonex capture of a Marshall-style amp with one of a Vox-style. The blend creates width and depth that a single track simply can't.
Stop Mixing at Full Volume
Quick tip that makes a bigger difference than any plugin: turn your monitors down. Way down. If your mix sounds good at low volume, it'll sound incredible loud. If it only sounds good cranked, it actually doesn't sound good at all. Your ears are lying to you because loud things sound more exciting regardless of quality.
At low volume, problems become obvious immediately. If your guitar disappears when you turn the volume down, it's not sitting in the mix properly. Fix it at low volume and everything else falls into place.
The Cheat Sheet
Let's bring it all together with a quick reference you can pull up every time you record:
Before recording: Pick a capture/profile that was designed for mix contexts, not just solo playing. Six String Lab packs are made with this in mind.
High-pass filter: 80-150Hz depending on how dense your mix is.
Cut the mud: Dip 1-2dB around 300-500Hz if things sound boxy.
Find your presence: Gentle boost in the 1-4kHz range. Sweep to find the sweet spot.
Tame the fizz: Low-pass around 10-12kHz if the top end is harsh. For high-gain tones, try even lower, around 6-8kHz.
Compress lightly: 3:1 ratio, medium attack, medium release. Just enough to even things out.
Double track and pan: Two takes, hard left and hard right. Different captures on each side for extra width.
Mix quietly: If it sounds good at low volume, it sounds good period.
