Your IR Is Half Your Tone (And You're Probably Ignoring It)

What Even Is an IR?

If you've spent any time in the amp modeling world, you've probably heard the term "impulse response" thrown around like confetti at a guitar show. But here's the short version: an IR is a digital snapshot of a speaker cabinet, microphone, mic placement, and the room they were recorded in. It's not a simulation or an approximation. It's a scientifically measured recording of exactly how sound behaves when it leaves a speaker and hits a microphone.

Think of it this way. Your amp model (or Kemper profile, Tonex capture, NAM capture, whatever you're running) handles the preamp and power amp behavior. The gain, the sag, the compression, the breakup. But the IR handles everything after that. The speaker. The mic. The placement. The room. And that "everything after that" part? It's roughly half of what you actually hear as your tone.

Let that sink in for a second. Half.

Why Most Players Get This Backwards

Here's what usually happens. You download a killer amp capture. Maybe it's a cranked Plexi, maybe it's a scooped modern high-gain monster. You load it up, strum a chord, and... it sounds kind of weird. Fizzy. Boxy. Not like the demo at all. So what do you do? You blame the capture. You download another one. Then another. Then you end up with 500 captures on your hard drive and none of them sound right.

Sound familiar? We literally wrote a whole post about that problem. But here's the thing most people miss: the capture was probably fine. Your IR was the bottleneck.

It's like buying a world-class studio monitor and then listening to it through a blanket. The source material is great. The thing translating it to your ears is killing it.

The Mic and Cab Are Doing the Heavy Lifting

If you've ever recorded a real amp in a studio, you know this instinctively. You can have the same amp cranked to the same settings, and just by swapping the microphone or moving it two inches, the tone changes dramatically. A Shure SM57 right on the dust cap sounds bright and aggressive. Move it to the edge of the cone and it gets warmer and darker. Swap it for a Royer 121 ribbon mic and suddenly everything is smooth and silky.

That's exactly what's happening inside your IR. Every IR was captured with a specific mic, on a specific cab, in a specific position. When you load an IR, you're making all of those decisions at once. And if those decisions don't complement your amp model, your tone is going to suffer no matter how good the capture is.

This is why the same Tonex capture can sound completely different with two different IRs. The capture didn't change. The "speaker cab and mic" changed. And that's the part doing the heavy lifting.

Stock IRs: The Elephant in the Room

Most modelers ship with built-in cab simulations, and honestly? Some of them are pretty good. The Quad Cortex has solid stock cabs. The Kemper's cabinet section is decent. But "decent" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. Stock IRs are designed to sound acceptable across a wide range of amp models. They're the "medium salsa" of the tone world. Not offensive, but not exactly exciting either.

The problem is that most players never look beyond them. They spend hours tweaking amp parameters, adjusting gain and EQ, messing with virtual tube types, and the whole time their cab IR is just sitting there on the default setting, quietly ruining everything.

If you're running NAM captures or NeuralDSP captures through stock cabs and wondering why your tone feels flat, this is almost certainly why. Swapping to a high-quality third-party IR is the single biggest upgrade you can make without spending a dime on new gear.

How to Actually Pick the Right IR

Here's where it gets fun. Picking IRs doesn't have to be overwhelming. Most working guitarists end up settling on a handful of go-to IRs, usually three to five, that cover their bases. Here's a simple framework:

For cleans and edge-of-breakup: Look for IRs captured with condenser mics or ribbon mics. These tend to have a smoother top end and more "air" in the high frequencies. A 1x12 or 2x12 open-back cab IR works great here. Think Fender-style sparkle and chime.

For crunch and classic rock: SM57-based IRs on a 4x12 with Greenback speakers are the bread and butter. There's a reason this combo has been the studio standard for decades. It's punchy, it's midrange-forward, and it cuts through a mix like a hot knife.

For high-gain and metal: Look for IRs with V30 speakers (Celestion Vintage 30s) captured with a blend of dynamic and condenser mics. V30s have that aggressive upper-midrange bark that keeps high-gain tones from turning into mush. Pair that with a tight, close-mic'd IR and you've got chunk for days.

For recording and studio work: Multi-mic IRs or IR packs that include several mic positions give you the most flexibility. Being able to blend a close SM57 with a room mic adds depth and realism that single-mic IRs can't touch.

The key is to experiment, but experiment with the IR first before you start tweaking your amp model. Get the cab and mic right, then adjust the amp to taste. Most people do it backwards.

IRs and the Capture Ecosystem

Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough: the relationship between your captures and your IRs depends on your platform.

Kemper profiles include the cab in the profile itself. When you load a Kemper profile, you're getting the amp AND the cab as one package. But here's the cool part: you can separate them. You can take the amp section from one profile and pair it with the cab section from another, or load a completely different IR. This is one of Kemper's most underrated features, and most players never touch it.

Tonex captures work similarly. They capture the full signal chain by default, but you can run them without the cab and load your own IR instead. If a Tonex capture sounds good but not quite right, try stripping the cab and loading a third-party IR. It's a game changer.

NAM captures are interesting because many NAM models are captured without a cab at all, especially the DI captures. That means you NEED a good IR, because without one you're listening to a raw amp signal with no speaker filtering. It sounds like an angry wasp in a tin can. Not ideal. If you're running NAM, your IR game needs to be strong.

HeadRush clones and NeuralDSP captures follow similar patterns. The capture handles the amp character, and the IR handles the speaker/mic/room character. Two halves of the same coin.

The Resolution Question

You might have seen IRs advertised at different sample rates and bit depths. 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz. Does it matter? Kind of.

Higher resolution IRs (48kHz and above) can capture more detail in the high-frequency response and phase information. In practice, the difference between 44.1kHz and 48kHz is subtle. The jump to 96kHz is more noticeable in a studio setting, especially if you're recording at high sample rates. But for live use? 48kHz IRs are more than enough for most players.

What matters more than sample rate is the quality of the original capture. A well-recorded IR at 44.1kHz will smoke a poorly recorded one at 96kHz every single time. Don't chase numbers. Chase tone.

Stop Tweaking Your Amp. Swap Your IR.

Here's the takeaway, and I'm going to be blunt about it: if you're spending hours dialing in amp parameters and your tone still isn't clicking, stop. Swap your IR first. Load something completely different. Go from a 4x12 to a 1x12. Switch from an SM57 IR to a ribbon mic IR. Try a different speaker type.

You'll be shocked at how much changes. Suddenly that "fizzy" high-gain capture sounds thick and chunky. That "muddy" clean tone opens up and sparkles. The amp model was fine the whole time. The IR was just fighting against it.
