Here's the thing about amp captures and profiles: they already have a cab baked in. When you loaded that killer Kemper profile of a cranked Plexi, you didn't just get the amp. You got the 4x12, the SM57 two inches off the cone, the room, the preamp coloring from whatever interface was used. The whole chain.
So when you play that through a regular guitar cab, you're running a cab sim into a cab. Two cab colorations stacked on top of each other. It's like putting sunglasses on over your sunglasses. Sure, it blocks the sun, but everything looks awful.
This is exactly why FRFR (Full Range, Flat Response) speakers exist. They're designed to reproduce exactly what your modeler or capture is putting out, without adding their own tonal fingerprint. Think of them as a window instead of a filter.
FRFR vs. Guitar Cabs: Why It Actually Matters
A traditional guitar cab is built to color your sound. That's literally the point. A Celestion Vintage 30 doesn't sound the same as a Greenback, and neither of those sounds like a Jensen. That's awesome when you're running a tube amp into a cab. The amp and the cab are designed to work together. But when you're running NAM captures that already include a mic'd cab in the signal chain, adding another cab on top is a recipe for mud.
FRFR speakers take themselves out of the equation. They reproduce the full frequency range without emphasizing or cutting anything. Your NeuralDSP captures sound like NeuralDSP captures. Your HeadRush clones sound like HeadRush clones. What you hear is what you actually dialed in.
The "But It Doesn't Feel Like a Real Amp" Problem
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room. A lot of guitarists try FRFR once, hate it, and go back to their guitar cab. And honestly? That's fair. Voicing options. Some FRFR speakers have switchable voicing modes that add a slight guitar-cab flavor to the response. This is great for players transitioning from traditional cabs who want something that feels a little more familiar without going full colored-speaker. Each monitoring option has its place, and the smartest players use all three.
Headphones are your late-night best friend. They're detailed, they're private, and they let you hear every nuance of your Kemper profiles without waking up the house. The downside? They don't move air. You can't feel the low end in your chest. And tones that sound perfect in headphones sometimes need tweaking when you move to speakers.
Studio monitors are the gold standard for recording and mixing. If you're tracking guitars with NAM captures in your DAW, studio monitors give you the most accurate picture of what your recorded tone actually sounds like. They're flat, they're detailed, and they translate well to other playback systems.
FRFR speakers are for playing live and rehearsing at volume. They give you the flat response of studio monitors but with the power and projection you need to keep up with a drummer. If you're running a HeadRush rig or a Quad Cortex at a gig, this is what you want on stage.
The key is to dial in your tones on studio monitors or good headphones first, then fine-tune for your FRFR. Starting the other way around usually leads to tones that sound great on stage but fall apart in a recording.
The Secret Weapon: Using Your FRFR as a Capture Reference
Here's a trick that most people miss. If you make your own captures or profiles, an FRFR speaker is the best way to A/B your capture against the real amp. Set up your real amp mic'd through a PA or FRFR, then switch to your capture through the same FRFR. You're comparing apples to apples because both signals are going through the same flat-response playback system.
This is way more accurate than comparing your capture through headphones to your amp in the room. The room coloring, the distance from the speaker, the volume difference... all of those variables disappear when you use the same FRFR for both.

Common FRFR Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Putting it on the floor and wondering why it sounds muddy. Floor coupling adds bass. That's physics. Either raise it up on a stand, tilt it back, or cut some low end in your EQ. Problem solved.
Running it way too loud for the room. FRFR speakers are efficient. You probably need way less volume than you think, especially at home. Crank it at a gig, sure. But in your bedroom, keep it reasonable or your tones will sound way different at lower volumes thanks to the Fletcher-Munson curve (the psychoacoustic phenomenon where your ears perceive less bass and treble at low volumes).
Using the same patches for headphones and FRFR. Different playback systems need different settings. Save separate presets for your headphones, your monitors, and your FRFR. It takes an extra ten minutes of setup and saves you hours of frustration.
Ignoring the room. FRFR speakers interact with your room just like any other speaker. Corners add bass. Hard walls add reflections. If your room sounds bad with studio monitors, it'll sound bad with an FRFR too. Basic acoustic treatment goes a long way.

Your Tonex captures, Kemper profiles, NAM captures, HeadRush clones, and NeuralDSP captures are only as good as what you play them through. The best capture in the world sounds terrible through the wrong speaker, and the right FRFR setup makes even a decent capture sound like a million bucks.
