Here's a scene that plays out in bedrooms and home studios every single day: you load up an incredible Kemper profile or Tonex capture, and it sounds fantastic for about three seconds. Then you start tweaking. A little more bass. Scoop the mids. Boost the treble. Add a high cut. Wait, now it sounds thin. Boost the low mids. Cut the presence. And suddenly you've spent 45 minutes turning a killer tone into a muddy, fizzy mess that sounds worse than the stock preset you started with.
Sound familiar? Yeah, we've all been there.
The truth is, EQ is the most powerful tool in your modeler's arsenal, and also the easiest one to completely screw up. Most players treat EQ like a volume knob for frequencies they don't like. Just turn down the stuff that bugs you, right? Wrong. That approach is why your captures sound lifeless and your profiles sit weird in a mix.
Let's fix that.
Why Captures and Profiles Already Have Great EQ (If You'd Stop Fighting It)
Here's something people forget: when someone captures an amp or profiles it, they're capturing the ENTIRE tonal signature of that amp at that specific setting. The EQ curve, the way the mids interact with the gain structure, the way the bass tightens up at higher volumes. All of it. That's the whole point.
So when you load a NAM capture and immediately crank the bass to 8 and scoop the mids, you're basically telling the original amp, "Hey, I know you were dialed in perfectly by someone who actually owns this amp and spent hours finding the sweet spot, but I think I know better." Spoiler: you probably don't.
Start by leaving the EQ flat. Seriously. Load up a Kemper profile and just play. Give it a solid five minutes before you touch a single knob. Most well-made captures and profiles sound great with the EQ right where it is. Your fingers, your pickups, and your guitar's volume knob will do more for your tone in those first five minutes than any EQ tweak ever will.
The "Only Cut" Rule (And Why It's Almost Right)
You've probably heard the old mixing wisdom: cut, don't boost. And for working with amp captures, this is about 90% correct. Here's why.
When you boost a frequency on a capture or profile, you're adding something that wasn't in the original amp tone. You're essentially painting over the amp's natural voice with a digital EQ curve. Sometimes that works fine. But more often, it introduces artifacts, harshness, or a "processed" quality that makes the whole thing sound less like a real amp and more like a plugin pretending to be one.
Cuts, on the other hand, are subtractive. You're removing frequencies that might be clashing with your room, your guitar, your pickups, or the rest of your mix. That's a much more natural and transparent operation.

The Three EQ Moves That Actually Matter
OK, so you've played the capture flat for five minutes and you've decided it needs a little help. Here are the only three moves you should be reaching for 90% of the time.
1. The Low Cut (80-120 Hz)
This is the single most useful EQ move for any guitarist running captures or profiles. Everything below about 80-100 Hz is stuff you can feel but can't really hear in a guitar context. It's sub-bass rumble, room noise, and low-end mud that makes your tone sound boomy and undefined. Slap a gentle high-pass filter around 80-100 Hz and watch your Tonex captures suddenly tighten up like they hit the gym.
For high-gain stuff, you can push this up to 120 Hz without losing anything important. Your bass player will thank you, and your mix will breathe.
2. The Presence Tame (3-5 kHz)
This is where the "ice pick" lives. If your profile or capture has an aggressive upper-mid spike that makes you wince on the high strings, a gentle 1-2 dB cut somewhere in the 3-5 kHz range will smooth things out without killing the clarity. This is especially common with high-gain Kemper profiles that were captured at stage volume but you're playing through headphones or studio monitors at conversation level.
Key word: gentle. If you're cutting more than 3 dB here, pick a different capture. You're fighting the tone instead of shaping it.
3. The "Room Fix" High Cut (Optional, 12-16 kHz)
This one is controversial, and honestly, most of the time you should skip it entirely. But if you're playing through an FRFR speaker in a bright, reflective room and everything sounds harsh and "digital," a very subtle roll-off above 14-15 kHz can take the edge off. Think of it like the natural high-frequency absorption that happens when you're standing in front of a real guitar cab. The speaker and the air between you and the cone naturally roll off those super-high frequencies.
But here's the critical warning: never cut below 12 kHz. Once you start chopping into that range, your tone loses all its sparkle, air, and "alive" quality. It'll sound like you threw a blanket over your amp. And if you're recording or going direct to a DAW, skip the high cut entirely. Your NAM captures and HeadRush clones will sound better in the mix with all that top-end information intact.
Stop Using the Amp's EQ Like a Mixing Console
This is the biggest mistake we see. Players load a capture and then start using the amp's bass/mid/treble/presence controls like they're mixing a finished track. Those controls are designed to shape the amp's voice BEFORE the gain stage and power section. On a real amp, turning the mids from 5 to 3 doesn't just cut 3 dB at 800 Hz. It changes how the entire amp responds, how the gain breaks up, how the harmonics stack.
On a capture or profile, those controls are approximations. They work, and modern platforms like Tonex and Kemper do a surprisingly good job of making them feel interactive. But they're still not the same as the real circuit. So if you're cranking the amp EQ knobs to extreme positions, you're pushing the model into territory where the approximation starts to break down.
The move: keep the amp EQ controls within plus or minus 2 clicks of noon. If you need bigger changes, use a post-amp parametric EQ block instead. That way you're shaping the OUTPUT of the capture, not trying to re-engineer its internal gain structure.
The IR Is Half Your EQ (Don't Ignore It)
If you've read our post on IRs, you already know this. But it bears repeating in an EQ context: the impulse response (cabinet simulation) is doing more EQ work than any knob you'll ever twist. A bright IR will make a dark capture sound bright. A scooped IR will make a mid-heavy profile sound hollow.
Before you touch a single EQ parameter, try swapping IRs. Seriously. Load three or four different cabinet IRs with the same NeuralDSP capture and listen to how drastically the tone changes. You'll often find that the "EQ problem" you were trying to solve was actually an IR mismatch all along.
This is especially true with third-party IRs. The IR that shipped with your capture was probably chosen because it complements the amp's natural voice. Random IRs from the internet? That's a lottery ticket.
Context Changes Everything
Your capture sounds boomy when you play alone in your room? That bass might be exactly what it needs to sit right in a full band mix. That ice-pick presence that's making your ears bleed at bedroom volume? That's the frequency range that cuts through drums and bass and makes your guitar actually audible on stage.
The point: EQ in context, not in isolation. If you're tweaking tones for a band setting, do it with backing tracks or (better yet) at rehearsal with the actual band. If you're tweaking for recording, solo the guitar track AND listen to it in the full mix before you make any EQ decisions.

Let's keep it stupid simple:
DO: Play the capture flat for 5 minutes before touching anything. Use a low cut around 80-100 Hz. Make small, surgical cuts when needed. Swap IRs before reaching for EQ. EQ in the context of a full mix or band.
DON'T: Boost more than 2-3 dB anywhere. Scoop the mids (your band will hate you). Cut below 12 kHz on the high end. Use extreme amp EQ settings on captures. EQ in isolation and expect it to translate.
