Your Captures Don't Suck. Your Gain Staging Does.

You just downloaded a killer pack of amp captures. You loaded one up, strummed a chord, and... it sounds like someone stuffed a wet blanket inside a trash compactor. Fizzy. Muddy. Lifeless. So you reach for the next capture. Same thing. And the next one. Same thing again.

Before you leave a one-star review or swear off digital amp tones forever, let's talk about what's actually going on here. Because nine times out of ten, the captures are fine. Your gain staging is the problem.

What Is Gain Staging (And Why Should You Care)?

Gain staging is just a fancy way of saying "setting the right volume at every point in your signal chain." From your guitar's pickups to your interface input to the capture itself to your output, every single link in that chain has a sweet spot. Hit it, and everything sounds alive, dynamic, and responsive. Miss it, and you get fizz, mud, noise, or some unholy combination of all three.

Here's the thing: when someone creates a Tonex capture or a Kemper profile, they dial it in at a specific input level. The capture process is calibrated. The gain structure is set. If your signal coming in is way hotter or way quieter than what the capture expects, you're feeding it garbage. And garbage in, garbage out. That's not a Six String Lab problem. That's a physics problem.

Step One: Your Guitar's Output Matters More Than You Think

Let's start at the source. Your pickups are the first gain stage, and they vary wildly. A set of vintage-output single coils might push 100mV. A pair of active EMGs? Easily 1.5V or more. That's a massive difference, and it completely changes how every capture or profile responds to your playing.

If you're running hot pickups into a capture that was voiced with moderate-output humbuckers, you're slamming the front end harder than intended. The result? Extra saturation, compressed dynamics, and that nasty digital fizz that makes people say "modelers sound fake." They don't sound fake. You're just overdriving the input.

Quick fix: roll your guitar's volume knob back to 7 or 8. Seriously. That's it. You'll be shocked how much cleaner and more dynamic your NAM captures and NeuralDSP captures sound when you stop hitting them with a firehose of signal.

Step Two: Your Interface Input Is the Silent Killer

Your audio interface has an input gain knob. Most people set it once, forget about it, and never touch it again. That's a mistake.

The goal here is simple: get a strong, clean signal into your DAW without clipping. You want your input level peaking around -12dB to -6dB when you're playing hard. Not slamming into the red. Not barely registering on the meter. Right in that sweet spot where the signal is healthy but has headroom for dynamics.

If your interface input is cranked too high, you're clipping before the signal even reaches your capture plugin. That means distortion that has nothing to do with the amp tone and everything to do with your converter running out of headroom. Turn. It. Down.

If your interface input is too low, you're boosting the noise floor along with the signal when you inevitably turn things up later. Not great either. Find the middle ground, and your Kemper profiles and Tonex captures will thank you.

Step Three: The Capture's Own Gain Knob Is Not a Volume Knob

This is where people really go off the rails. You load up a capture and the first thing you do is crank the gain knob because you want more distortion. But the gain control on a capture or profile doesn't work like a volume knob on a stereo. It's recreating what happens when you push the preamp section of a real amplifier harder.

When a capture was created, the maker dialed in a specific gain level that sounded great with that particular amp. The sweet spot was baked into the capture. When you crank the gain way past where it was set during the capture process, you're pushing the model into territory it wasn't designed to reproduce accurately. The result is fizzy, harsh, and unnatural.

Instead of maxing the gain on one capture, try this: find a capture that was made at the gain level you actually want. If you need a cranked Plexi tone, grab a capture that was made with the amp already cranked. If you want edge-of-breakup, find one captured at that setting. Step Four: Your Output Level Is Lying to You

Here's a sneaky one. You've got two captures loaded up and you're A/B testing them. One sounds "better" than the other. But is it actually better, or is it just louder?

Louder always sounds better to the human ear. It's called the Fletcher-Munson effect, and it tricks you every single time. If Capture A is 3dB hotter at the output than Capture B, your brain will pick Capture A even if Capture B actually has better tone, more dynamics, and sits in a mix way better.

The fix: level-match your outputs before comparing. Use a metering plugin after your capture and make sure both options are hitting the same loudness level. Then compare with your ears. You might be surprised which one actually wins when the playing field is level.

This applies whether you're running HeadRush clones, NAM captures, or NeuralDSP captures. The principle is universal.

Step Five: Effects Placement and Gain Staging Play Together

If you're running pedals (real or virtual) in front of your captures, guess what? Those are gain stages too. A Tube Screamer-style overdrive with the level at noon is boosting your signal before it hits the capture. That's the whole point of a boost pedal. But if you're not accounting for that extra gain, you're right back to slamming the input harder than the capture was designed for.

Pay attention to unity gain. When you kick on a boost or overdrive in front of your capture, toggle it on and off and listen. Is the overall volume jumping significantly? If so, you're not just adding color. You're changing the gain structure. Dial back the pedal's output level until the volume stays roughly the same whether the pedal is on or off. Now you're adding character without wrecking your gain staging.

Same goes for effects after the capture. Reverbs, delays, and modulation all add energy to the signal. A lush hall reverb with the mix at 50% can easily push your output 3-6dB hotter. Pull back the output on your effects or compensate at the end of your chain. Your Tonex captures were designed to sound great with proper levels. Don't drown them.

The 60-Second Gain Staging Checklist

Before you ever judge a capture or profile, run through this list:

1. Guitar volume: Start at 7-8, not 10. Adjust to taste from there.

2. Interface input gain: Peaks around -12dB to -6dB when playing hard. No clipping.

3. Capture/profile gain: Start at the default setting. Only nudge it slightly if needed. If you want more gain, find a hotter capture instead of cranking the knob.

4. Effects levels: Check unity gain on boosts and overdrives. Watch output levels on reverb and delay.

5. Output level: Level-match when comparing captures. Don't let volume trick your ears.

That's it. Five things. Takes 60 seconds. And it'll make every single capture in your library sound dramatically better.
