What Is NAM A2? (And Why Your Captures Sound Better Now)

OK, So What Actually Is NAM A2?
If you've been anywhere near the guitar internet lately, you've probably seen people losing their minds over "NAM A2." And for once, the hype is actually justified.
NAM A2 (Architecture 2) is a ground-up redesign of the Neural Amp Modeler's core technology. It launched on June 2, 2026, built by TONE3000 in partnership with NAM creator Steve Atkinson. Think of it like going from a flip phone to a smartphone. Same basic idea, wildly better execution.
The original NAM architecture (now called A1) was already turning heads. It let people create incredibly accurate NAM captures of real amps, pedals, and outboard gear. A2 takes that foundation and makes it sound better, run faster, and work on way more hardware. We'll dig into all of that below.
Better Sound Quality (Like, Measurably Better)
This isn't just marketing speak. TONE3000 actually put A2 through rigorous testing against every major competitor, and the results are kind of wild.
They ran quantitative tests across 39 different tones covering everything from sparkling Fender cleans to dimed Mesa Dual Rectifiers to vintage Neve 1073 preamps. A2 beat Neural DSP's Neural Capture V2, IK Multimedia's ToneX V2, and Line 6's Proxy by a significant margin.
But here's where it gets really interesting. They also ran a massive blind listening test using the MUSHRA methodology (that's the gold standard the BBC and other broadcast organizations use to evaluate audio quality). Over 1,000 participants submitted more than 100,000 ratings, comparing A2 captures against the real recorded gear and every competitor. Participants didn't know which model was which. A2 came out on top.
What does that mean for you? The NAM captures you're loading into your rig are now closer to the real amp than anything else on the market. The dynamics, the gain structure, the way a tube amp blooms when you dig in, the sag of a cranked power section: A2 captures all of it more faithfully than ever before.
Way Less CPU (Your Laptop Will Thank You)
Here's the part that made a lot of bedroom producers do a double-take.
A2-Full (the maximum quality version) delivers better sound than A1 while using 30 to 40 percent less CPU. Let that sink in. Better tone AND your computer works less hard. You can now run three A2-Full captures for roughly the same CPU cost as two old A1 captures.
To put some real numbers on it: a MacBook with an Apple M-series chip can run 64 A2-Full models simultaneously. Sixty-four. If you need that many amp tones running at once, you might be doing something wrong, but the point is that headroom is no longer a problem.
For the home studio crowd running NAM captures in their DAW alongside a bunch of other plugins, this is a massive quality-of-life upgrade. No more bouncing tracks just to free up CPU. No more choosing between your amp capture and that reverb plugin you love.
A2-Lite: NAM on a $3 Chip
This is the part that's going to reshape the entire market.
A2 comes in two flavors. A2-Full is the studio-grade version we just talked about. A2-Lite is a scaled-down version specifically designed for embedded hardware, like guitar pedals and multi-effects units. It runs at 50% CPU on a $3 ARM Cortex-M7 chip.
Read that again. Pro-quality neural amp modeling on a three-dollar chip.
This is why companies are tripping over themselves to add NAM support to their hardware. Blackstar, Lava Music, Darkglass, HeadRush, Chaos Audio, and Dimehead are all onboard, with dozens more announcing support later this year. The Blackstar Beam Mini, which launched in May, is already shipping with native NAM A2 support. HeadRush brought TONE3000 integration to their entire Prime, Core, and Flex Prime lineup in July. The Darkglass Anagram now connects directly to TONE3000.
What makes A2-Lite truly special is "slimmable" NAM. One single capture file automatically adapts to whatever hardware it's running on. Full quality in your DAW, scaled appropriately for your pedal. No separate versions, no conversions, no compromises. One file, everywhere.
What This Means for Every Platform

Competition makes everyone better. When NAM raises the bar this dramatically (and does it with open-source technology that anyone can build on), every other platform has to respond. IK Multimedia already dropped ToneX V2 earlier this year. Neural DSP updated their Neural Capture technology. The tide is rising for all capture platforms, and that's great news for players on every system.
Plus, if you're the type who runs multiple platforms (and honestly, why wouldn't you be?), NAM A2 makes it easier than ever to add NAM captures to your arsenal alongside your Kemper profiles or Tonex captures. The CPU savings alone make it worth experimenting.
It's Open Source (And That's a Big Deal)
A2's model architecture, training code, and inference engine are fully open source. Any company can use, modify, and ship it in commercial products for free.
Compare that to every other major platform where your tones are locked inside a walled garden. Your Quad Cortex captures only work on a Quad Cortex. Your ToneX captures only work in ToneX. Your Helix presets only work on Helix.
NAM files work everywhere NAM is supported. Plugins, pedals, amps, even web browsers. And because A2 is open source, that ecosystem is growing fast. It's like the difference between buying music on iTunes in 2005 versus having a universal audio file that plays anywhere. NAM A2 captures are just files. Load them wherever you want.

How to Get Started with A2
Getting up and running is simple:
In your DAW: Download the latest NAM plugin called "Gateway" from neuralampmodeler.com. Browse and download A2 tones from TONE3000. Point the plugin at your downloaded captures. Done.
On hardware: If you've got a HeadRush Prime, Core, or Flex Prime, you can browse and load TONE3000 captures directly from the touchscreen. Blackstar Beam Mini and Darkglass Anagram users get similar direct integration. More hardware is being added constantly.
Already have A1 captures? No worries. TONE3000 retrained every single capture in their library to support A2. Both A1 and A2 versions are available, so nothing breaks. Your existing workflow stays intact.
