The Latency Question

This is the question everyone asks, and the answer is: it depends on your interface, but it's usually not a problem. Most modern audio interfaces can run at buffer sizes low enough (64 or 128 samples) that the latency is barely noticeable. If you're hearing a delay between when you pick a string and when it shows up in your headphones, drop your buffer size.

Tips for the Best DI Signal

A few quick tips to make sure your DI recordings are as clean and usable as possible.

Set your input gain so the loudest thing you play peaks around -6dB to -10dB. You want headroom. Clipping a DI signal is not something you can fix later, and it'll sound awful through any capture or profile.

Use fresh strings. Nobody wants to hear this, but a DI signal is brutally honest. Dead strings sound even deader without amp compression and distortion masking the dullness. If it's been more than a couple weeks, change them.

Don't touch your tone knob unless you have a specific reason. Record with your tone knob wide open. You can always darken things later with EQ, but you can't add high-frequency detail that was rolled off at the source.

Check your cable. A noisy or intermittent cable will ruin a DI take faster than anything else. The raw signal has nowhere to hide, so any crackling or interference is going straight to tape (well, straight to your hard drive).
