Reverb and Delay Are Making Your Captures Sound Worse (Here's How to Fix It)

You've Got a Great Capture. Stop Drowning It.
Here's the scenario. You've just downloaded a killer pack of Tonex captures or loaded up some new Kemper profiles. You strum a chord. It sounds incredible. Raw, punchy, alive. And then you do what every guitarist does: you slap on some reverb and delay.
And just like that, your tone turns to mush.
Look, we get it. Reverb and delay are the salt and pepper of guitar tone. But too much salt ruins the steak. And most guitarists are absolutely buried in reverb without even realizing it. Today we're going to fix that.
Why Default Effects Settings Are Sabotaging You
Every modeler ships with reverb and delay presets that are cranked way too high. Manufacturers do this because it sounds impressive in a demo room or a 30-second YouTube clip. Big, lush, ambient. You hear it and think "wow, this modeler sounds amazing."
But play that same preset in a band context or try to record it, and suddenly your guitar sounds like it's trapped inside a cathedral bathroom. Your notes lose definition. Your pick attack disappears. That tight, responsive feel you loved about the dry capture? Gone.
The first thing you should do with any new capture or profile is turn the effects OFF. Seriously. Listen to the dry tone. That's what the capture artist (hi, that's us at Six String Lab) worked so hard to nail. Get familiar with that sound first. Then add effects tastefully, like a chef who actually knows how to season food.
Where You Put Effects Matters More Than Which Effects You Use
This is the thing that trips up most modeler users. Signal chain order is everything, and most people get it wrong with captures and profiles.
Here's the deal. When you're running NAM captures or Tonex captures, the capture IS the amp and cab. It's a snapshot of the entire amp's character at a specific gain setting. Anything you put before it gets "amplified" by the capture, and anything after it sits on top of the finished sound.
Most of the time, you want reverb and delay AFTER the capture in your signal chain. This simulates putting a rack unit in your amp's effects loop or adding effects in post-production. It keeps the amp character intact and just adds space on top.
If you put reverb before the capture, the capture "amplifies" the reverb tails along with your dry signal. The result? A muddy, compressed mess where the reverb and your playing blur together into one soggy wall of sound. There are creative exceptions to this (shoegaze players, we see you), but for 95% of guitar tones, effects go after the capture.
Matching Effects to Your Capture Type
Clean captures: This is where you can be the most generous with reverb and delay. Clean Kemper profiles of Fender-style amps love a good spring reverb and a slapback delay. Keep the reverb decay relatively short (1.5 to 2.5 seconds) and the mix around 20-30%. For delay, a single repeat with 300-400ms works wonders for that classic country and blues vibe.
Edge-of-breakup captures: This is the sweet spot where most players live, and where effects choices matter the most. You want your reverb to enhance the sustain without killing the dynamic response. Plate reverb works beautifully here. Keep your mix level lower (15-25%) and use a moderate decay. For delay, a dotted eighth pattern at lower mix levels adds rhythmic interest without turning your riffs into soup.
High-gain captures: This is where 90% of guitarists go way overboard. High-gain HeadRush clones and NeuralDSP captures already have a ton of harmonic content and sustain built in. Adding a massive reverb on top of that is like putting whipped cream on a milkshake. You might think you want it, but your mix engineer definitely doesn't.
For high-gain tones, pull the reverb mix WAY back (10-15% max) and use a shorter decay. A room or small hall reverb works better than a cathedral or shimmer setting. For delay, keep it tight and rhythmic. One or two repeats, tops. If you can clearly hear the delay as a separate element, it's probably too loud.
The "Studio Pro" Secret: Less Is Always More
Here's something that took us years to figure out at Six String Lab. When we're profiling amps and making captures, we test them dry. We obsess over the raw tone because we know that's the foundation everything else is built on. And the pros who use our captures and profiles in real studio sessions? They use way less effects than you'd think.
Listen to your favorite guitar tone on a record. Now imagine how much reverb and delay you think is on that guitar. Got a number in your head? Cut it in half. That's probably closer to reality.
Recording engineers add reverb and delay during mixing, where they have full control over the exact parameters and how the effects interact with every other instrument in the track. If you print reverb and delay into your recorded guitar signal, you're stuck with it forever. That's why so many producers ask guitarists to record as dry as possible.
Even for live playing, dialing back your effects will make you sit better in the band mix. Your sound engineer will buy you a beer. Your bandmates will stop giving you that look. It's a win for everyone.
Platform-Specific Tips
Kemper: The Kemper has some of the best built-in reverbs in the game. The "Natural Reverb" algorithm is fantastic for Kemper profiles. But the factory presets crank the mix too high. Start with the mix at 15% and work up from there. Also, use the "ducking" parameter. It pulls the reverb back when you're playing hard and lets it bloom when you stop. Absolute game changer for keeping your tone clear and present.
Tonex: If you're running Tonex captures through the Tonex One or Tonex Pedal, your effects options are more limited on the hardware itself. The built-in reverb and delay are decent but basic. Consider running an external reverb pedal after the Tonex in your chain for more control. If you're using Tonex inside a DAW, you've got unlimited plugin options. Just remember the golden rule: less is more.
NAM: Since NAM captures typically run as plugins in your DAW, you have the advantage of using any reverb and delay plugin you own. This is awesome, but it also means you have zero guardrails. Resist the urge to reach for that convolution reverb of a gothic cathedral. Start with a simple algorithmic reverb, low mix, moderate decay. Get the balance right before you start getting experimental.
HeadRush: The HeadRush platform has a solid effects library. When pairing effects with HeadRush clones, take advantage of the touchscreen to visually place effects in the right spot in your signal chain. Drag your reverb and delay blocks AFTER the amp clone block. The visual routing makes it dead simple to see when something is out of order.
NeuralDSP: The Quad Cortex (and NeuralDSP plugins) have amazing effects, but the preset library tends toward "demo room" levels of reverb. When loading NeuralDSP captures, start from scratch with effects. Don't just swap the capture into an existing preset and keep the old effects settings. The interaction between the capture and the effects is totally different from one capture to the next.
The External Pedal Question
Should you use your modeler's built-in effects or run external pedals? For reverb and delay specifically, the built-in effects on most modern modelers are excellent. The Kemper, Quad Cortex, and HeadRush all have studio-quality time-based effects that would have cost hundreds of dollars as standalone units just a few years ago.
That said, if you've got a reverb pedal you absolutely love (Strymon BigSky, Walrus Audio Slo, Boss RV-6, whatever does it for you), there's nothing wrong with running it after your modeler or capture unit. Some players swear the character of their favorite pedal just can't be replicated digitally. We're not going to argue with that. Use what makes you happy and sounds right to your ears.
The one thing we WILL argue about: put it after the capture or profile in your chain, not before. We've already had that conversation.
Go Fix Your Tones
Here's your homework. Open up your modeler or DAW right now. Load your favorite captures or profiles from Six String Lab. Turn off ALL effects. Play for five minutes. Just the raw amp tone. Notice how clear and responsive it feels.
Now add reverb back in, but start at a mix level of 10%. Slowly bring it up until you can JUST barely hear it adding space to the sound. Stop there. Do the same with delay. That's your new baseline.
