Kemper just threw down the gauntlet.

Earlier this month, the company released OS 14.0 for its Profiler MK2 series and Profiler Player — and the headline feature, Profiling 2.0, is the kind of update that makes you sit up and pay attention. We're talking a complete overhaul of how Kemper captures amplifiers, and it's free. As in, you already own it if you have the hardware.

That's a big deal. Let's talk about why.

100,000 Frequency Points Is Not a Marketing Number

Okay, it kind of is a marketing number. But it also happens to be a real one.

The new profiling engine analyzes over 100,000 individual frequency points from your target amplifier during the capture process. For context, the original Kemper profiling technology — which was already considered best-in-class for over a decade — worked with a fraction of that resolution. The result is what Kemper calls "the most organic amp tones ever captured."

Bold claim. But based on what we're seeing in the forums and early user reports, it's not hyperbole. The new profiles have a dynamic feel that the old ones sometimes lacked, particularly in how they respond to pick attack and volume knob cleanup. That's always been the holy grail of digital amp capture — not just nailing the static tone, but getting the feel right.

The Feature List That Actually Matters

There's a lot in OS 14.0, but here's what's going to make the biggest difference for most players:

Authentic Gain Detection figures out the true gain structure of the amp you're profiling and maps it directly to the Gain control. This sounds simple, but it solves one of the most annoying problems with older profiles — where the Gain knob didn't quite feel like it was doing what the original amp's gain knob did.

Pure Cabinet Processing tackles high-frequency artifacts and phase issues that creep into close-mic'd captures. If you've ever profiled a cranked amp with an SM57 jammed against the grille cloth and gotten that weird, slightly brittle top end? This is aimed squarely at that problem.

Cabinet Morphing lets you tweak the perceived size and character of the cab in your profile. Think of it as a more sophisticated version of what IR mixing does, but integrated directly into the profile itself.

Liquid Profiling Integration is where it gets really interesting. This combines the captured profile with the original amplifier's tone stack behavior, so when you turn the Bass, Mid, and Treble knobs, they respond like the actual amp's controls — not like a generic EQ slapped on top of a static capture. This has been available since OS 10, but Profiling 2.0 takes the underlying capture quality to a new level, which makes the Liquid controls feel even more natural.

What This Means for the Profiling Landscape

Here's the thing nobody wants to say out loud: the profiling and capture space is getting crowded.

ToneX from IK Multimedia brought capture technology to a price point that made Kemper nervous. Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) made it free and open-source, which made everyone nervous. Neural DSP's Nano Cortex combined modeling and capture in a compact pedal format. And Line 6, Fractal, and others keep pushing their modeling engines forward.

Kemper's response with Profiling 2.0 is essentially saying: "We invented this. And we're still better at it."

Whether that's true depends on what you value. NAM captures can sound incredible, and the open-source ecosystem around it is growing fast. ToneX has a massive library and a polished workflow. But Kemper's new profiling engine, particularly with the Liquid Profiling integration, offers something the others don't — a capture that behaves like the amp it came from, not just sounds like it.

That distinction matters more than most people realize. When you're playing live or tracking in the studio, the way an amp responds to your dynamics is half the battle. A profile that nails the tone but feels stiff under your fingers is only halfway there.

The Compatibility Catch

One important note: Profiling 2.0 works at full resolution on MK2 hardware and the Profiler Player. If you're on an original MK1 unit, you can still load and play Profiling 2.0 profiles, but they'll run at standard resolution — essentially downsampled. You also can't create 2.0 profiles on MK1 hardware.

This is Kemper's way of nudging the holdouts toward newer hardware without completely abandoning them. Fair enough.
