How to Gig with Captures (Without Embarrassing Yourself)

So you finally did it. You ditched the tube amp, sold the 4x12, and went all-in on a modeler loaded with captures. Your bedroom tones are absolutely dialed. You sound like a record. Life is good.
Then you play your first gig and it sounds like a wet blanket stuffed inside a trash can.
Look, it happens to almost everyone. The jump from "sounds amazing at home" to "sounds amazing on stage" is one of the most frustrating transitions in all of guitar. But here's the thing: captures are absolutely gig-ready in 2026. The hardware is there. The technology is there. The tones are there. The problem is almost always in the setup, not the gear.
Let's fix that.
Your Bedroom Patches Are Not Gig Patches
This is the single biggest mistake capture users make when they step on stage for the first time. That lush, scooped, reverb-drenched tone that sounds incredible through your headphones at midnight? It will vanish the second a drummer starts hitting things.
Live tone needs to cut. That means more mids than you think you need, less gain than you think you want, and way less reverb and delay than you're used to. Think of it this way: at home, you're the whole band. On stage, you're one piece of a much larger puzzle.
The fix is simple. Build a completely separate set of patches for live use. Don't try to tweak your studio patches into live patches. Start fresh. Load up your favorite Kemper profiles or Tonex captures, bump the mids, roll back the gain a hair, and keep your time-based effects tasteful. Your future self (and your bandmates) will thank you.
Pick the Right Captures for the Job
Not every capture is built for the stage. That super-detailed, studio-mic'd capture with the room ambiance baked in? Gorgeous for recording. Terrible for a 200-capacity club with questionable acoustics.
For live work, you want captures that are tight, responsive, and cut through without being shrill. Here's what works:
Clean tones: Look for captures with some compression built in. A slightly pushed clean (think Fender on the edge of breakup) will sit way better in a live mix than a pristine, sparkly clean that gets lost the second the bass player starts thumping. Crunch and rhythm: This is where most of your set lives, so get it right. Medium gain captures with a solid midrange presence are your best friend. You don't need as much gain as you think. The FRFR Question (Yes, We Have to Talk About It)
Running direct to front of house with in-ear monitors is the cleanest, most consistent way to gig with captures. But plenty of players hate it because you lose that "amp in the room" feel. Fair enough.
An FRFR (Full Range, Flat Response) speaker on stage gives you a personal monitor that reproduces your captures exactly as they are. Think of it as a really loud, really accurate version of your studio monitors. You hear what the audience hears. That's the upside. The downside is that some FRFR speakers can feel a little clinical, a little "PA-like" compared to standing in front of a guitar cab.
The other option is running your modeler into a power amp and a traditional guitar cab. You turn off the cab simulation in your captures and just send the amp tone to a real speaker. This feels more like a real amp on stage. But now the audience hears a mic'd version of your cab through the PA while you hear the raw cab sound on stage. Two different experiences.
There's no wrong answer here. Plenty of touring pros use FRFR, plenty use traditional cabs, and plenty use both. The important thing is to pick one approach and get comfortable with it before you gig. Do not try a brand new monitoring setup for the first time at a show. That's how horror stories start.
The Sound Person Is Not Your Enemy
Here's a conversation that happens at every venue in America at least twice a week:
Sound person: "What's your setup?"
Guitarist: "It's a modeler with digital amp captures running through a..."
Sound person: [glazes over]
Keep it simple. "I'm running direct. Stereo if you have two channels, mono is fine too. Here's my XLR." That's it. They don't need to know about your Tonex captures or your custom IR library. They need a clean signal at a predictable level.
If you're running an FRFR on stage, let them know so they can account for the stage volume in their mix. If you're using a traditional cab, tell them so they can mic it (or not, depending on the venue).
The biggest favor you can do for a sound person? Show up with a consistent output level and patches that are already volume-matched. They will literally love you.
Have a Backup Plan (Because Murphy Was a Guitarist)
Things break. Power supplies die. Cables go bad. Firmware updates brick things at the worst possible moment. You need a Plan B.
At minimum, carry a spare set of cables, a spare power supply, and know how to factory reset your unit on the fly. If you're gigging regularly, having a small backup unit is worth considering. Export your setlist patches to a USB drive or cloud backup. If your main unit dies and you need to borrow someone's modeler, having your patches ready to load is the difference between a 5-minute fix and a 45-minute nightmare.

Build Your Setlist Patches Like a Professional
Random captures thrown into a modeler with no organization is a recipe for mid-song panic. "Wait, which bank was my lead tone in? Was it 3B or 4A? Oh no, that's the weird experimental fuzz patch."
Here's a system that works. Organize your patches by song, not by tone type. Bank 1 is Song 1, Bank 2 is Song 2, and so on. Within each bank, put your sounds in the order you need them. Verse clean in slot A, chorus crunch in slot B, solo lead in slot C.
If your setlist changes from gig to gig, keep a "utility" bank with your core tones: one clean, one crunch, one high-gain lead. That way you can always fall back to reliable sounds if you get lost. Load it up with your go-to NAM captures or HeadRush clones and you're covered for any situation.
Rehearse the Way You Gig
If you practice at home through headphones and then show up to a gig running an FRFR at stage volume, you're going to be surprised. And not in a fun way.
At least once before your first capture-powered gig, set up your full rig at rehearsal volume. Run it the way you'll run it on stage. Play through your whole set. Listen for patches that are too loud, too quiet, too muddy, or too bright. Fix them in rehearsal, not during soundcheck.
