Guitar Tone in the Age of Perfect Simulation: What's in Store for 2026?

On the threshold of indistinguishability, and what we might lose in crossing it.
Happy holidays from all of us at Six String Lab. I hope you're getting some time to rest, play, and maybe even write something new.
This was supposed to be a simple update on what to expect from us in 2026. But somewhere between "here's what we're building" and "here's why it matters," it turned into something else—a philosophical exploration of where guitar technology is headed and what it means for all of us.

I. The Moment of Indistinguishability
For years, I've been the person at the party telling anyone who would listen that digital guitar gear was "good enough." While purists were still dismissing modelers as cold, sterile, or somehow lesser, I was making records with cheap digital equipment and arguing that the gap had closed further than most would admit.
I was wrong. Not about digital being good enough, but about "good enough" being the destination.
Over the past year, something shifted. We're a very small team and we've been building a suite of guitar plugins that we'd originally planned to release in 2025. But we kept holding back. The results were good, sometimes very good, but they weren't living up to our own standards. We'd run A/B tests, hear the gap, and go back to the drawing board. Months passed. We started to wonder if we were chasing something that didn't exist.
Then, in the second half of 2025, things started to sound incredible. The A/B tests stopped working, not because the models were failing, but because we couldn't reliably tell which was which. Engineers who have spent decades with their ears pressed against guitar speakers, people who can identify a Jensen from a Celestion at twenty paces, were flipping coins. We do a lot of profiling and testing of all kinds of digital gear, and as a result we know some tricks to force a digital copy into revealing itself, but it wasn't working anymore.
We had built something that worked so well it had stopped being a copy of anything. It just was.
We have some really cool plugins coming in 2026, and we cannot wait to get them into your hands.
This isn't a story about our technology being impressive. It's a story about arriving at a threshold that philosophers have been warning us about for decades, and trying to understand what it means to cross it.
II. Baudrillard's Prophecy
In 1981, French philosopher Jean Baudrillard published Simulacra and Simulation, a dense meditation on what happens when copies no longer need originals. He described four stages through which representations evolve:
First, the image is a faithful reflection of reality, a good appearance, a sacrament. Think of the earliest attempts at digital amp modeling in the 1980s: obviously artificial, clearly pointing toward something real.
Second, the image masks and distorts reality. The Line 6 POD era. Useful, even liberating, but nobody was fooled. You could hear the digital.
Third - and this is where it gets strange - the image masks the absence of reality. The simulation becomes so refined that questioning what's "real" starts to lose meaning. We're in this stage now. When a profiler captures an amp so precisely that the amp's owner can't identify their own gear, what exactly is the "original" anymore?
Fourth, the image bears no relation to reality whatsoever. Pure simulacrum. It's not a copy of anything, it simply exists. We see this in amp models designed entirely in software: Dumble-inspired circuits that never passed through a soldering iron, vintage tones from amps that were never built.
Baudrillard's most famous formulation, borrowed from Borges, is that the map precedes the territory. The simulation becomes the reference point against which reality is judged.
For guitarists, 2026 may be the year this stops being philosophy and starts being Tuesday.
III. What Walter Benjamin Knew
The worry that mechanical reproduction would fundamentally alter art is not new. In 1935, Walter Benjamin published "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," arguing that original artworks possess an "aura", a unique presence in time and space, a testimony to history that no copy can capture.
"Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element," Benjamin wrote. "Its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be."
Benjamin was thinking about photographs and film, but his concern maps precisely onto our moment. A 1959 Fender Bassman is not merely a collection of components that produce a particular frequency response. It is an object that has existed for sixty-five years, passed through hands, accumulated scratches and burn marks and the oxidation of age. It was built in a factory that no longer exists, by workers whose great-grandchildren now walk the earth.
When we model that amp, capture it so perfectly that no ear can tell the difference, what happens to the aura?
Benjamin's answer was complex. He saw both loss and liberation. The "withering of aura" was real, but mechanical reproduction also democratized access to art, freeing it from ritual and tradition. The same photograph that lacks the presence of the original painting can hang in a thousand homes.
This is the tension we're living through right now.
IV. The Democratization Paradox
Let me be clear about something: the democratization of guitar tone is, on balance, a profound good.
I grew up without money. The idea that I could have afforded a Dumble, or a vintage Marshall, or even proper studio time was absurd. The guitars I learned on were borrowed or beaten. The amps were whatever wouldn't electrocute me.
Today, a teenager with a $200 audio interface and free software has access to tones that would have cost six figures two decades ago. The home studio segment now accounts for 38% of the global music production software market. The cost of a basic home recording setup has dropped by over 50% in the past decade. Artists who would never have been heard are making records in bedrooms and releasing them to the world.
This is liberation. This is expansion of who gets to make art.
But liberation has shadows.
The same democratization that lets a thousand flowers bloom has created an oversaturation that makes it nearly impossible for any individual artist to stand out. Streaming platforms are flooded with 100,000 new tracks per day. The gatekeepers are gone, but so is the curation. Professional studios, the places where intergenerational knowledge was passed down, are struggling against the pressure of bedroom production.
And there's something subtler happening. When everyone has access to the same presets, the same amp models, the same "perfect" tones—does everything start to sound the same? When the template is a simulation, does the simulation become the only acceptable sound?
V. Non-Things and the Weight of Objects
Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han has spent the past decade thinking about what happens when the material world fades into information. In his book Non-things: Upheaval in the Lifeworld, he writes:
"We no longer inhabit earth and dwell under the sky: these are being replaced by Google Earth and the Cloud. The terrestrial order is giving way to a digital order, the world of things is being replaced by a world of non-things."
Han distinguishes between things, physical objects that provide stability, that accumulate history, that anchor us in the world—and non-things, which are weightless, ephemeral, accessed rather than owned.
A vintage amplifier is a thing. It has mass. It warms a room, literally. It smells like hot tubes and old capacitors. When you turn it on, there's a ritual: the hum, the wait, the moment when the sound blooms into presence. It will outlive you, or it will fail spectacularly, and either outcome is meaningful.
A plugin is a non-thing. It exists as code, activated by license, vanishing when subscriptions expire or companies fold. You don't own it; you access it. It takes up no space, generates no heat, requires no ritual.
Han isn't simply nostalgic—he's identifying a genuine transformation in how we relate to the world. "Things are fixed points—anchors, handles—of existence," he writes. When they disappear into information, something is lost that cannot be recovered by making the information more accurate.
Guitar culture has always been obsessively material. We fetishize the patina on vintage instruments. We argue about whether Brazilian rosewood sounds different than Indian rosewood. We talk about "mojo" as if it were a measurable property.
What happens when all of that becomes optional? When the sound is indistinguishable but the object is gone?
VI. Heidegger's Warning
Martin Heidegger, in his 1954 essay "The Question Concerning Technology," was not interested in whether technology is good or bad. He wanted to understand its essence—what technology fundamentally is and does.
His answer was Enframing (Gestell): the way technology reveals the world to us as "standing-reserve", resources to be optimized, stored, and deployed at will.
A river becomes a power source. A forest becomes lumber inventory. And crucially, humans become "human resources," held in reserve for economic utility.
The danger Heidegger identified was not that technology fails but that it succeeds too well, that it becomes the only way we can see the world. When everything is revealed as standing-reserve, we lose access to other ways of relating to things. The river stops being a place of mystery or beauty and becomes only a power source.
Apply this to guitar tone. When every amp that ever existed becomes a scrollable menu of presets, when switching from a Vox to a Marshall to a Mesa takes a single click, when "vintage" is a filter rather than a history, have we gained access or lost something harder to name?
The vintage amp, in Heidegger's terms, is not merely a tone-generation resource. It is a thing that discloses a particular relationship between electricity and sound, between human craftsmanship and physical material, between the past and the present. It resists being reduced to a preset.
The plugin has no such resistance. Its entire purpose is to be standing-reserve, or tone on demand, optimized for workflow.
VII. The Reverse Simulacrum
Here is the scenario that keeps me up at night:
A young guitarist downloads a neural amp model, let's say a recreation of a classic blackface Fender. They learn to play through this model. They write songs with it. They develop their ear, their touch, their whole musical identity in conversation with this simulation.
Years later, they encounter an actual vintage Fender. They plug in, expecting revelation, and instead feel... disappointment. The real amp is noisy. It's inconsistent. It doesn't sound quite like what they learned on. It doesn't sound like itself—or rather, itself as they've come to understand it.
What has happened? The map has preceded the territory. The simulation has become the reference point against which reality is judged.
This is not hypothetical. We are already seeing guitarists who encounter tube amps for the first time and find them lacking, not because the amps are bad, but because they don't match the perfected, noise-gated, EQ'd simulations these players have internalized as "authentic."
When enough people learn to play through simulations, the simulation becomes the standard. The original becomes the deviation.
Baudrillard predicted this. "The simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth—it is the truth which conceals that there is none. The simulacrum is true."
VIII. Predictions for 2026
Let me be specific about what I think is coming:
Neural amp modeling will become the default for recording. Not because guitarists are lazy or don't care about tone, but because the results are indistinguishable and the workflow advantages are overwhelming. The question will shift from "digital or analog" to "which model."
Vintage gear will become increasingly ceremonial. Collectors will still collect. Purists will still worship at the altar of NOS tubes and original transformers. But the practical justification will evaporate. Vintage amps will become what horses became after the automobile: beloved, beautiful, maintained with care, but no longer necessary.
Plugin subscription fatigue will intensify. As more gear becomes "non-things" in Han's sense, the instability of the subscription model will become intolerable. Musicians will demand ownership. Some companies will adapt; others will collapse, taking their customers' gear with them.
A backlash is coming. Every technological revolution produces its counter-revolution. Some guitarists will reject digital entirely, building identities around tube amps and analog pedals the way vinyl collectors defined themselves against streaming. This backlash will be partly aesthetic and partly political. A rejection of optimization culture.
The first generation of guitarists raised entirely on modelers will begin to set the taste for everyone. They will be the touring musicians, the producers, the critics. Their reference points will be simulations. This will change what "good guitar tone" means in ways we cannot yet predict.
IX. So What Do You Do?
If you've read this far, you might be wondering: "Okay, but I just want to play guitar. What does any of this mean for me?"
Here's what I'd tell myself:
Use whatever helps you make music. The philosophical implications of digital simulation don't change whether a tool serves your art. If a $99 plugin gets you closer to the sound in your head than a $3,000 amp, use the plugin. The song doesn't care about the provenance of its tone.
But stay awake. Know what you're trading when you trade it. If you've never played through a real tube amp, find one and spend an afternoon with it—not because it's "better," but because it's different. The noise, the sag, the way it responds to your pick attack differently at different volumes. This is knowledge worth having, even if you never use it.
Resist the tyranny of the preset. The easiest path with digital gear is to scroll through presets until one sounds "good enough." This is how everyone ends up sounding the same. Dig deeper. Learn what the knobs do. Build your sound from components you understand.
Own what you can. When you have the choice between subscribing and owning, own. Non-things can vanish. The company folds, the license expires, the plugin stops working with your new operating system. Things persist. This goes for your music files too—don't let your entire catalog live on a platform you don't control.
Remember that "indistinguishable" is not the same as "identical." Two things can sound the same and still be different in ways that matter. The experience of playing through a vintage amp in a room is not the experience of playing through a simulation in headphones, even if a recording of both would be indistinguishable. Some differences aren't captured in audio.
Make the music only you can make. This is the only thing that was ever true, and it remains true. The tools change. The gatekeepers change. The economics change. But the task is the same: find the sounds that belong to you and put them in the world.
X. Where Six String Lab Stands
At Six String Lab, we are building technology that contributes to this transformation. Our 2026 releases represent years of work pushing our technology toward that threshold of indistinguishability and beyond it.
I don't offer this confession as absolution. We are complicit in the shift we're describing. We have chosen to build these tools because we believe in their value: because affordable, high-quality tone expands who gets to make music, because eliminating the barriers of expensive gear is a genuine good, because the sounds we can now create are remarkable.
But I refuse to pretend that technological progress comes without loss. Something is gained, and something is lost. The task of thinking people is to hold both truths simultaneously.
Benjamin understood this. The democratization of art was real, and the withering of aura was also real. You could celebrate one and mourn the other without contradiction.
Heidegger understood this. Technology reveals genuine possibilities and conceals others. The task is not to reject technology but to maintain a "free relationship" to it—to remain aware of what it discloses and what it hides.
Han understands this. The shift from things to non-things is happening. We can resist it, accommodate it, or simply observe it, but we cannot pretend it isn't occurring.
XI. The Sound of What's Coming
Here is my hope for what we're building:
That the tools we release in 2026 will put world-class tone in the hands of anyone who wants it. That a kid in a bedroom somewhere will use our technology to make something beautiful, something they couldn't have made otherwise. That the democratization of guitar tone will continue its work of expanding the circle of who gets to create.
But also:
That we will not pretend the simulation is "just as good" without acknowledging what "good" leaves out. That we will hold space for the things that resist optimization. That we will remember what the map cannot contain.
Baudrillard was not simply pessimistic. He was descriptive. He was telling us what was coming so we could see it clearly when it arrived.
It has arrived. The question is not whether to cross the threshold—we are already across. The question is whether we will cross it with our eyes open.
The map is becoming the territory. Some of that is liberation. Some of that is loss. The task is to tell the difference.
