Gain Staging 101: Why Your Captures Sound Like Garbage (And the 5-Minute Fix)

You downloaded some killer Tonex captures, loaded them up, strummed a chord... and it sounds like a swarm of angry bees trapped inside a tin can. Or maybe it's the opposite: your Kemper profiles sound like they're buried under three mattresses and a wet blanket.
Congratulations. You have a gain staging problem. And you're not alone. This is probably the most common reason guitar players throw their hands up and declare that "digital just doesn't sound like the real thing." Spoiler: it does. You're just feeding it the wrong signal.
The good news? This is a five-minute fix. Let's get your rig sounding like it should.
What Even Is Gain Staging?
Gain staging is just a fancy way of saying "making sure each link in your signal chain is getting the right amount of signal." Too much signal going into a capture or profile and everything gets fizzy, harsh, and compressed in the worst way. Too little and your tone is thin, lifeless, and noisy.
Think of it like watering a plant. Too much and you drown it. Too little and it wilts. There's a sweet spot, and finding it takes about five minutes once you know what to look for.
This applies to every platform out there: Kemper profiles, Tonex captures, NAM captures, HeadRush clones, NeuralDSP captures. The principles are universal.
The Number One Mistake: Slamming the Input
Here's what happens to most people. They plug in, see that the input meter barely moves, and crank the input gain until the meter looks "healthy." Big mistake. Huge.
Captures and profiles were created at a specific input level. The person who made them (hi, that's us at Six String Lab) dialed in the amp at a specific gain, set the EQ a certain way, and captured that exact moment in time. When you slam your input gain way past where it should be, you're essentially overdriving the capture itself. Not in a cool way. In a "why does everything sound like a broken speaker" way.
Most captures and profiles expect an input level somewhere around unity gain. That means the signal coming into your modeler should be roughly the same level as what your guitar puts out naturally. For most humbuckers, that's somewhere around -12 to -18 dBFS when you're strumming hard. Single coils will be a bit lower.
The Five-Minute Fix
Here's the dead-simple process that works on every platform:
Step 1: Reset your input gain to zero (or unity). Every modeler handles this differently. On the Kemper, check your Clean Sens and Distortion Sens settings. On the Quad Cortex, look at the input block gain. On a NAM plugin, check your DAW's input trim. Whatever platform you're on, start flat.
Step 2: Load a clean capture or profile. Don't start with your highest gain preset. Load something clean and transparent. If you have one of our free packs, grab a clean Fender-style tone.
Step 3: Play hard and watch the input meter. Strum your hardest. Dig in. Play like you're mad at the guitar. Your input should peak somewhere around -12 to -6 dBFS. If it's slamming into the red, your input gain is too hot. If it's barely registering, it's too cold.
Step 4: Adjust until it sits right. You want your hardest playing to peak around -6 dBFS on the input. This gives you headroom for dynamics while keeping the signal strong enough to drive the capture properly.
Step 5: Now load your high-gain stuff. Switch to your favorite high-gain Tonex capture or Kemper profile. If the gain staging is right on the clean, it'll be right on everything else. The capture handles the gain internally, just like the real amp would.
Platform-Specific Tips
Kemper: The Clean Sens and Distortion Sens parameters are your best friends. Clean Sens adjusts how clean profiles respond to your pickups. Distortion Sens does the same for gained-up profiles. If you're switching between a Strat and a Les Paul, you'll probably need to adjust these. Don't just set it and forget it.
Tonex: The input level inside the Tonex plugin or pedal is critical. IK Multimedia designed the capture engine to expect a specific input range. If you're running Tonex as a plugin in your DAW, make sure your DI signal isn't being boosted by your interface's preamp. A lot of audio interfaces have a "instrument" mode that adds gain you don't need.
NAM: NAM captures are particularly sensitive to input levels because the neural network was trained on a specific input/output relationship. If your input level is way off from what was used during training, the model's predictions get wonky. This is the platform where gain staging matters most, so take the extra minute to get it right.
HeadRush: HeadRush clones benefit from the same principles. Use the input block at the front of your signal chain to tame hot pickups or boost weak ones. The touchscreen makes it easy to see your levels in real time.
NeuralDSP: On the Quad Cortex, the input gain on the I/O settings page is where you set this. NeuralDSP captures respond really well when the input is calibrated properly. It's the difference between "this sounds pretty good" and "wait, is this a real amp?"
The Output Side Matters Too
Gain staging isn't just about the input. The output side of your signal chain is equally important, especially if you're running into an FRFR speaker, a power amp, or a DAW.
If your output is too hot, you're clipping your audio interface, your FRFR's input stage, or your DAW's master bus. If it's too low, you're losing dynamic range and your tone sounds flat and lifeless.
The fix is the same: use the output level control on your modeler to hit a healthy level without clipping. For recording, aim for peaks around -6 dBFS on your DAW's input meter. For FRFR speakers, start with your modeler's master output at about 50% and adjust the speaker's volume from there.
The "But It Sounds Different Than the Demo" Problem
Ever buy a pack of captures or profiles, load them up, and think "this sounds nothing like the demo video"? Nine times out of ten, it's gain staging. The person who made the demo had their input calibrated correctly. Your rig might be running hotter or cooler than theirs.
This is especially true when you're comparing tones across platforms. A Kemper profile and a NAM capture of the same amp will sound remarkably similar when both rigs are gain-staged correctly. When they're not? They'll sound like completely different amps.
So before you leave a one-star review saying the captures are garbage, check your gain staging. Seriously. Five minutes. That's all it takes.
Quick Reference Cheat Sheet
Input level target: Peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS when playing hard.
Output level target (recording): Peaks around -6 dBFS on your DAW meter.
Output level target (live): Modeler output at ~50%, adjust volume at the speaker.
Hot pickups (active EMGs, high-output humbuckers): You'll almost certainly need to lower input gain.
Low-output pickups (vintage single coils, P90s): You might need a slight input boost, but less than you think.

But the truth is, gain staging is the unsexy foundation that makes everything else work. It's the difference between "digital sucks" and "wait, why would I ever mic a cab again?"
